Artist's Comments

This one was awarded First Place in the Santa Cruz county fair. Sept. 18th 2005 in Division 3 class 4.
It did not get best in show. Darn it.

I took this one a while ago in my very own back yard. I was watching the mother and her baby feed on the weeds growing in the back yard when the mother walked down into the creek bed. I was able to walk right up to this baby and shoot photos of it. It was actually playing dead at this point.
Note how camoflage the deer is. As for those little blury white spots all around the deer, those are called "forget me nots" they are actually little blue flowers that grow wild in my area. Cool huh.
I was wrong animals do see in color!

Thanks! Yes it is interesting that most predators see only in black and white. This allows for true camoflage, those little white folwers in the photo are actually "forget me not's" they are a beautiful blue. It's a shame I didn't have color film with this one.

Do most predators really see in black an white? I mean, a lot of camouflage seems colour dependant, and I read somewhere that while canines don't see colour, felines certainly are capable of seeing at least some colour. As well, many insects are brightly coloured so as to warn potential predators that they are poisonous. Also the milk snake mimics the colours of the coral snake to fool potential predators into thinking it is the more dangerous snake.

Either way, it's an excellent photo. You're very lucky to have gotten such an opportunity. I'm actually kinda jealous lol.
